Description
Notes on the art:
A vigilant mother vaquita guides her rambunctious youngster through the deadly waters of their home in the Sea of Cortez. Even with no fishermen in sight, the dangers of man remain ever present as a ghostly derelict net grasps up from the depths, threatening to entangle all who come too close.

Vaquitas are so very rare and there are few pictures of them alive (and none of them from underwater) which is what inspired me to paint this piece back in 2015 - to let the viewer see and empathize with them in their dangerous home realm. This art was drawn freehand and painted digitally, the progress can be seen in the blog section of my website. :)

The vaquita is the smallest cetacean in the world - a beautiful porpoise endemic to the Gulf of California. The greatest threat to the vaquita is man. The vaquita's tiny bodies become hopelessly entangled in our fishing nets... and they drown. This fate may drive them to extinction very soon. Current reports say that fewer than 30 vaquitas are left. A very small percentage of the remaining vaquitas are likely to be females who can produce offspring. With so few left the vaquita population can not stand to lose any more individuals. The Mexican government recently banned the use of gill nets in the waters the vaquita calls home, but the sea is the new wild west, and the rules are being broken.
