Description
Mystic River S2 XII
Photograph By Marco Oliveira
This image belongs to a second series of pictures I took at the Alfusqueiro river (The Mystic River Series - you can find this first series in the Galleries tab). However, truth be told, this second series was the first to be shot! Things just turned out this way! It happens!
This is a place I know for many years now, since my childhood days. It has its own legend (see below), but, as you might notice, everytime I visit this place, I always let my spirit run free. It's a mystical and inspirational place, so I always end up creating something soothing for the soul!
That peaceful state of mind is what I want to share with you if you should decide to buy one of these art prints for your home or office.
And now, the legend:
The legend says that, a long time ago, a very rich man lived here. He owned properties on both banks of the Alfusqueiro River, but never bothered to build a bridge. He was a miser. One day, a stranger dressed in black appeared to him and said that he would build him a bridge, but in return he wanted the soul of the rich man. The rich man realized immediately that it was the devil he was talking to, but even so, he signed the contract with his own blood. The rich man did not believe that the devil could build the bridge on time, until Christmas Eve as agreed, so he hoped to keep his soul. But the construction was proceeding rapidly. The rich man started to get worried and distressed. One day, while walking along the river Alfusqueiro, embroiled in terrible thoughts, an old woman he did not know appeared to him. He told her the reason of his worries and the old woman reminded him that he should keep his word, since the devil had not failed his. However, she whispered in his ear a ploy to trick the devil... On Christmas Eve, just before midnight, the man would have to withdraw an egg from the barn and go to the river, to where the bridge was being built. Then he would grab the egg and throw it so that it would fall right where the devil would place the final stone. The rich man followed the plan and from inside the egg came a beautiful rooster that immediately started to crow. The devil, thinking he had failed to finish the job on time, fled and was never seen in these parts again. And this is why this bridge is still known today as the Devil's Bridge!
